My Top 10 Beauty Uses for Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is life! It’s become essential in our household, my Hubby and Hero are clearly addicted as well and now we feel as if we can’t live without it.

It is also the first thing we pack when going on holiday. I say this because we just got back from a little trip to the coast and it came in handy in so many ways, especially considering we were traveling with our little one.

First off as anyone who’s travelled with an infant knows, the amount of stuff in your baggage pretty much doubles so finding a way to save space is essential. So now, Instead of packing loads of face creams, hair serums, lotions and oils. We just bring a jar of this fabulous natural oil as a substitute for all the above.

Here are my favorite ways to use it for healthy skin and hair for my whole family.

Hair treatment

Hair can get incredibly dry and damaged when exposed to salt water, chlorine and sunlight. So I always make it a priority to have a little coconut oil in both my and Hero’s hair to protect and nourish the strands as we go about our day. Its excellent for preventing sun damage and dehydration. Its also great for defining her little curls, smoothing out frizz and just generally makes hair way more manageable.

Sun protection

Coconut oil is packed full of antioxidant vitamin E. It is a wonderful natural moisturizer that can help to heal, protect and nourish damaged skin. It creates a barrier that protects your skin from drying out while also providing a small amount of protection from the sun, (It has a naturally occurring sun protection factor of up to 5 SPF, how cool is that?!) I do advise that you follow it up with sunlotion though (you can never have too much protection from the sun especially at this time of year). Just apply it generously before visiting the beach or swimming pool to shield your skin and hair from harmful UV radiation and chemicals.

Facial care

I use coconut oil on my face everyday. Not only does it improve the moisture and lipid content of people with dry skin it also contains lauric acid, which has anti-fungal, anti-viral, and antibacterial properties. This means coconut oil should be an essential tool in your kit for acne protection and the overall maintenance of a clear complexion.

Hero’s skin

Virgin coconut oil is one of the best and most natural ways to look after children’s skin. I use coconut oil daily as a simple moisturizer for Hero’s skin after bath time, and since she gets about three baths a day down at the coast, it comes in particularly useful. I’ve also noticed that it helps prevent and treat heat rash and diaper rash because of its anti-bacterial and anti- fungal properties.

Mosquito bite & Sunburn Remedy

Gah, Mosquitos and sunburn, the only two things about the coast I don’t like! However lets be honest, they’re almost unavoidable. We all forget to cover up or apply sunscreen on occasion and the mosquitoes at the coast have an uncanny ability to sneak into almost any mosquito net. Coconut oil works great for soothing itchy bug bites and sore sunburns just generously apply it to soothe your skin. If you do get a particularly bad sunburn you should try an over the counter hydrocortisone cream to ease the discomfort

Magical Face scrub

I make a great and easy scrub with coconut oil and which leaves my skin super exfoliated and soft.

All you need to do is take a small amount of coconut oil and let it melt in the palm of your hand then add half a teaspoon of baking soda, mix and scrub thoroughly then rinse it off with a gently soap. You will feel an almost immediate change in your skin. Do it at least once a week and trust me you’ll see a beautiful glow in your complexion.

Make up primer

In Nairobi where the air is pretty dry, I use coconut oil as a makeup primer. Makeup sits better on heavily moisturized and supple skin. Coconut oil makes a great makeup base when I want my skin to glow all day.

Makeup remover

Coconut oil is a fabulous makeup remover! It’s fast and easy and it feels amazing to just rub a little on your face and instantly have all your makeup melt off. It’s effective for even the harder to remove products like false lashes and long wear lipstick.

Body Scrub

Be gone dry skin! You can mix up equal parts of brown sugar and coconut oil for a luxurious and yummy smelling body scrub that moisturizes and exfoliates at the same time.

Carrier oil

If you’re an essential oil fan like me, Kentaste coconut oil also works perfectly as a carrier oil and provides a good base for other scents. After a long day I add a couple drops of lavender oil to the coconut oil I use to moisturize to help me relax. In the evening at the coast, I add a few drops of Citronella oil and apply it to my legs and arms to keep away the vicious mosquitos.

When it comes to selecting what coconut oil to use, Kentaste coconut oil is my choice. It’s a versatile health and beauty product that I trust for my whole family. They are a proudly Kenyan company and use only locally sourced Kenyan coconuts so I get to support a local business and Kenyan farmers while getting all the benefits of a quality product. I also think they are a fun, brand that creates cool engaging content, seriously check out their facebook here

Their product is all natural Cold pressed and Whole Kernel with No additives. It’s just pure coconut goodness that makes sure you Ken-taste the coast

You can pick up their coconut oil at all your local supermarkets. Chandarana, Carrefour, Tuskys, Naivas and Shoprite.
